Advocacy
The Mental Health Association of Kentucky
is a tireless voice for mental health issues in Kentucky and in
our nation's capital. We advocate for access to appropriate and
affordable care, equal health insurance benefits for mental illnesses
and physical ailments, and continued federal funding for research
and community programs. On many issues, the National Mental Health
Association (NMHA)
takes the lead with its affiliate network and a coalition of national
organizations to ensure fair and equitable treatment for people
with mental health disorders.

Stigma
Stigma, meaning a mark of shame
or discredit, hurts and isolates people with mental disorders,
creating barriers to receiving appropriate treatment. Rather than
receiving compassion and acceptance, people with mental illnesses
often experience hostility, discrimination, and intolerance. This
stigma permeates society and includes patients, family members,
and professionals. Awareness raising is an important aspect of
the educational programs we provide. Stigma watch programs track
coverage of mental health issues for fairness and accuracy and
work with the media to present positive portrayals.
