This startling statistic, identified in studies sponsored by the National Institute for Mental Health in 2005, describes the scope of the challenge many Kentuckians face.

While effective treatments for mental illnesses exist, stigma, cost, and access continue to be barriers for people who live with them. Mental Health America has published a series of downloadable fact sheets about mental illnesses addressed to family members and friends who are in a position to support a loved one who needs or seeks treatment:
